I know how this feels. The contrast between artistic, purpose-driven work and goal-oriented, money-making work can feel stark. The world keeps telling us that succeeding as an artist is basically impossible and if we seek comfort in life, we should give up on our artistic musings and get a “real" job”. Artists are driven to the sidelines of society to present themselves as commentators living off of inconsistent grants. And if an artist dares to do something more commercial to make an income, they feel like they may be attacked by the artist community itself for selling their souls.
The conversation around artistic careers is full of tension and nuance and there is also a lot of silence. Unspoken truths and imagined fears.
